Kino gegen Austerität

Im Rahmen der Kampagne „International solidarisch – Schluss mit Austerität!“ veranstalten wir ein Filmseminar als Freiluftkino am Philosophenturm der Uni Hamburg (Von-Melle-Park 6), bei dem wir mit Filmen rund um das Thema Austerität vs. Solidarität die internationale, kulturelle und historische Bedeutung des Bruchs mit dem Neoliberalismus reflektieren wollen. Die kommende Veranstaltung findet im Hörsaal der Sozialökonomie (ehem. HWP, Von-Melle-Park 9) statt.

Bei der nächsten Vorstellung am Mittwoch, den 19. Juli 2023, ab 21 Uhr schauen und diskutieren wir zusammen den Dokumentarfilm „Silence Breakers“ von Silvina Landsmann aus dem Jahr 2021. Der Film wird im Originalton mit deutschen Untertiteln gezeigt. Wir beginnen wie immer mit einer kurzen Einführung zum Film und im Anschluss wird es wieder Gelegenheit zur Diskussion geben. Die Einführung in den Film übernehmen die Regisseurin und ein Aktivist von „Breaking the Silence”, die zudem nach der Vorführung noch mit uns über den Film diskutieren möchten.

Aus der deutschen Geschichte von Faschismus, zwei begonnenen Weltkriegen und der industriellen Massenvernichtung von über 6 Millionen Jüdinnen und Juden erwächst eine besondere historische Verantwortung: Frieden, internationale Kooperation, die Überwindung von Vorurteilsstrukturen jeglicher Art sowie die Verwirklichung global menschenwürdiger Lebensbedingungen sind grundgesetzlich verankerter Auftrag eine:s Jede:n.
Ein wesentliches Hemmnis für alle Bestrebungen in dieser Richtung ist – neben der sozialdarwinistischen Menschenfeindlichkeit des originär neo-braunen Sumpfes – der mittlerweile inflationär betriebene Missbrauch der deutschen Geschichte zur Rechtfertigung heutiger Kriegspolitik und Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit.
Hochproblematisches Beispiel dafür ist der interessengeleitet-offizielle Umgang mit dem Nahost-Konflikt. Durch die Etikettierung jeglicher Kritik an der Politik des israelischen Staats als „antisemitisch“ wird nicht nur selbst ein völkisch-nationales Narrativ bedient (Staat = „Ethnie“) und damit jedem realen Kampf gegen Antisemitismus ein absoluter Bärendienst erwiesen. Im gleichen Atemzug soll zudem jede oppositionelle Haltung zur extrem rechten israelischen Regierung mundtot gemacht und ein Mantel des Schweigens gelegt werden über die Völker- und Menschenrechtsverletzungen, die das israelische Militär seit Jahrzehnten an der palästinensischen Bevölkerung in Gaza und dem besetzten Westjordanland verübt.
Umso eindrucksvoller wirkt vor diesem Hintergrund das unermüdliche Engagement der Aktivist:innen von „Breaking the Silence“, deren mutigen Einsatz für eine zivile Konfliktlösung und ein Ende der israelischen Besatzungspolitik, die selbst UN-Generalsekretär Ban Ki-Moon als Apartheid-Regime bezeichnete, Silvina Landsmann in ihrem Film dokumentiert.
Die 2004 gegründete NGO besteht ausnahmslos aus aktiven und ehemaligen Soldat:innen der israelischen Armee, die in den besetzten Gebieten eingesetzt sind oder waren. Anhand von Zeugenaussagen und Schilderungen dokumentieren sie die menschenverachtenden Praktiken des Besatzungsregimes, an denen sie selbst mitgewirkt haben. Sie brechen damit nicht nur das verordnete Schweigen über die wahre Rolle der israelischen Armee, die mit Landesverteidigung und Terrorismus-Abwehr wenig zu tun hat, sondern in enger Kollaboration mit der ultra-reaktionären Siedler-Bewegung an ethnischen Säuberungen, Landnahmen, Vertreibungen und der Zerstörung lebenswichtiger Infrastruktur der palästinensischen Zivilbevölkerung aktiv partizipiert. Sie brechen zugleich auch das Schweigen darüber, dass die aggressive Inhumanität der Besatzung auch die Besatzer selbst zutiefst entmenschlicht.
Ihr Wort hat Gewicht. Denn sie sprechen – anders als die meisten Verfechter der völkerrechtswidrigen Okkupation – aus (verstörender) Erfahrung. Ihre persönlichen Zeugnisse entfalten enorme Wirkung. Denn sie entlarven zugleich die zynische Verlogenheit all jener, die von ihren luxuriösen Wohnzimmersesseln für einen profitträchtigen Dauerkriegszustand im Namen des „jüdischen Volkes“ bereitwillig die Verrohung der gesamten Gesellschaft ebenso in Kauf nehmen wie die Psychotisierung ganzer Generationen wehrpflichtiger, jugendlicher Israelis, die in einem militärisch nicht zu lösenden Konflikt verheizt werden sollen.
Kaum etwas vermag den Frieden so naheliegend verwirklichbar zu machen wie Soldat:innen, die gegen den Krieg selbst zu Felde ziehen. Gerade deswegen werden die Aktivist:innen von „Breaking the Silence“ von reaktionären Kräften im In- und Ausland auf das Übelste verleumdet, angegriffen und verfolgt.
Der Film zeigt anschaulich, wie ihnen dennoch gelingt, ihr ziviles Aufklärungsengagement dagegen stetig zu intensivieren: bei geführten Touren für ausländische Gäste durch das besetzte Hebron, durch Diskussionsveranstaltungen in Universitäten, in der Begegnung mit palästinensischen Freunden, Militärangehörigen an den Checkpoints und aufgebrachten Siedlern, bei Aufklärungsaktionen inmitten der Partymeilen Tel Avivs und nicht zuletzt in der streitbar-solidarischen Auseinandersetzung um die richtige Strategie im Aktivenkreis selbst.
So entsteht ein wegweisendes Dokument des humanistischen Kampfes für Frieden, Recht und Menschenwürde. Genau da, wo solches Wirken unmöglich erscheinen soll, entfaltet es seine größte Überzeugungskraft. Ein perspektivbildendes Beispiel, das Schule machen sollte.

As part of the campaign „International solidarity – stop austerity!“ we are organising a film seminar as an open-air cinema at the Philosophenturm of the University of Hamburg (Von-Melle-Park 6), where we want to reflect on the international, cultural and historical significance of the break with neoliberalism, with films on the topic of austerity vs. solidarity. In case of bad weather, we can move to the lecture hall of social economics (former HWP, Von-Melle-Park 9).

At the next screening on Wednesday, 19 July 2023, starting at 9 p.m., we will watch and discuss the documentary film „Silence Breakers“ by Silvina Landsmann from 2021. The film will be shown in its original language with German subtitles. As always, we will start with a short introduction to the film and afterwards there will again be an opportunity for discussion. The introduction to the film will be given by the director and an activist from „Breaking the Silence“, who will also discuss the film with us after the screening.

More about the film:
The German history of fascism, the beginning of two world wars and the industrial mass extermination of more than 6 million Jews gives rise to a special historical responsibility: peace, international cooperation, the overcoming of prejudice structures of all kinds as well as the realisation of globally humane living conditions are the constitutional mandate of each and everyone.
A major obstacle to all efforts in this direction – apart from the social Darwinist misanthropy of the original neo-Brown swamp – is the now inflationary abuse of German history to justify today’s war policies and crimes against humanity.
A highly problematic example of this is the interest-led-official handling of the Middle East conflict. By labelling any criticism of the policies of the Israeli state as „anti-Semitic“, not only is a racial-national narrative itself being served (state = „ethnicity“) and thus any real fight against anti-Semitism is being done an absolute disservice. In the same breath, any oppositional stance to the extreme right-wing Israeli government is to be silenced and a cloak of silence is to be placed over the international and human rights violations that the Israeli military has been perpetrating for decades against the Palestinian population in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
Against this backdrop, the tireless commitment of the activists of „Breaking the Silence“ is all the more impressive. In her film, Silvina Landsmann documents their courageous efforts for a civil solution to the conflict and an end to Israel’s occupation policy, which even UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon described as an apartheid regime.
The NGO, founded in 2004, consists exclusively of active and former soldiers of the Israeli army who are or were deployed in the occupied territories. On the basis of testimonies and descriptions, they document the inhuman practices of the occupation regime in which they themselves participated. In doing so, they not only break the imposed silence about the true role of the Israeli army, which has little to do with national defence and defence against terrorism, but actively participates in ethnic cleansing, land seizures, expulsions and the destruction of vital infrastructure of the Palestinian civilian population in close collaboration with the ultra-reactionary settler movement. They also break the silence about the fact that the aggressive inhumanity of the occupation also deeply dehumanises the occupiers themselves.
Their word carries weight. Because they speak from (disturbing) experience – unlike most advocates of the occupation, which is against international law. Their personal testimonies have an enormous impact. At the same time, they expose the cynical mendacity of all those who, from their luxurious living room chairs, willingly accept the brutalisation of the entire society in the name of the „Jewish people“ for the sake of a profitable permanent state of war, as well as the psychotisation of entire generations of conscript, young Israelis who are to be burnt up in a conflict that cannot be solved militarily.
There is hardly anything that can make peace so obvious as soldiers who fight against war itself. For this very reason, the activists of „Breaking the Silence“ are slandered, attacked and persecuted by reactionary forces at home and abroad.
The film vividly shows how they nevertheless succeed in constantly intensifying their civilian commitment to raising awareness: on guided tours for foreign guests through occupied Hebron, through discussion events in universities, in encounters with Palestinian friends, military personnel at the checkpoints and angry settlers, during awareness-raising campaigns in the middle of Tel Aviv’s party miles and, last but not least, in the contentious and solidary debate about the right strategy within the activist group itself.
The result is a groundbreaking document of the humanist struggle for peace, justice and human dignity. Exactly where such work should seem impossible, it unfolds its greatest persuasive power. A perspective-building example that should set a precedent.

We will show a film every fortnight; the Wednesdays when no film is shown will be used for the anti-austerity activist meetings, where we will discuss the further development of the campaign, the gaining of new alliance partners and the planning of further activities.
